I created Blanket and Board in the response to the Covid-19 pandemic and protest of racial injustice after the death of George Floyd. It started with a self-care Sunday picnic as a way for friends and family to have a safe space to process the grief and collective trauma we were experiencing in isolation. At the time, I was a trauma therapist, working with children with complex trauma needs, and due to the pandemic, I had a hard time keeping in touch with my kids and families and yearned for a creative outlet that supported those around me.
As a social worker and mother, I have spent 10+ years advocating for social justice and community empowerment. Life gets busy, and sometimes it gets challenging to honor my needs. Blanket & Board was created to reinforce the beauty of self-care through food, creativity & bringing people together outdoors. Understanding ourselves and others revolves around a person-in-environment concept. Therefore paying close attention to environmental factors and how changes to space and circumstance can support well-being are a big part of creating a safe environment.
